Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (September 25, 1906 – August 9 1975) was a Soviet composer, pianist, and politician. His style was generally influenced by the Romantic tradition, but also had other influences. At times, Shostakovich faced hostility from the Soviet government; while at other times, the Soviet government commissioned Shostakovich to produce works to be used for propaganda purposes; thus, Shostakovich's style and many of his works were influenced by his relationship with the government.
